The Trinidad and Tobago Prison Service is an arm of the Criminal Justice System and a division of the Ministry of National Security. The administration reports directly to the Minister of State in the Ministry of National Security.
The Trinidad and Tobago Prisons Service is a Division of the Ministry of National Security. It has at its head the Commissioner of Prisons, who has delegated powers under the Constitution of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, and who is ultimately responsible to the Ministry of National Security.

AMONG THE MANY AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE PRISONS SERVICE ARE:
- To ensure the safe custody of inmates by maintaining security.
- That those serving terms of imprisonment with Hard Labour are made to work and are trained in various skills to afford them an opportunity for gainful employment on their release.
- To provide Welfare and recreational programmes for all inmates. This will help them to conform to Society’s norms and standard and to lead a useful life on their release.
